Standards are technical regulations that
have been drawn up for all materials and therefore also for ceramic tiles.
They:
- Classify the products,
- Establish the characteristics that they
must have in order to fulfil their prescribed purpose,
- Defined the methods of testing for each
characteristic,
- Prescribe tolerance limits for each of
the different characteristics.
The body that is responsible for setting
standards in Italy is UNI (Italian National Standardization Authority).
The Italian standards are in fact known as UNI standards. Some products
meet not only Italy's UNI standards but also satisfy European standards
(UNI EN standards) or even world standards (UNI ISO). Ceramic tiles are
at present UNI EN certified but will soon be certified UNI ISO.
